My Art Education experience ranges from in school, out of school, summer programs, and administrative positions since 2000. Having worked with preschool through high school level students, general population and special need populations, I have seen that any student can grow to love making and creating art. In conjunction with C2L Philly and Mural Arts job training program facilitated this mural, A Place to Go, which celebrates the Philadelphia Water Department and its commitment to protecting our city’s waterways. The scene depicts community members, including the Senior Environmental Corps (SEC), working together in one of the Water Department’s Rain Check program rain gardens. These gardens give stormwater “a place to go”—using natural resources and native plants to capture and absorb runoff before it enters storm drains, helping to keep our rivers cleaner and reducing flooding in neighborhoods. This quote “Give the Water A Place to Go” is by a Germantown resident Ms. Rosalind, discussing the flooding in the neighborhood.
The backdrop features the Schuylkill River and a bridge of centuries-old schist stone adorned with vibrant contemporary graffiti, symbolizing the connection between history and innovation. In the image we collaged handmade paper, made with Kaitlin Pomerantz, created in historic Rittenhouse Town in Wissahickon Park and as well as cyanotypes made with local flora at Hansberry Community Garden and Nature Center. We also overlaid the painting with linoprints of local flora and textured shapes.
