Eating healthy and on a budget while traveling: food blog from recent trip to a convention in New Orleans.

Eating healthy and on a budget doesn’t have to be hard while traveling especially if you have certain diet restrictions like gluten-free or dairy free. These tips work if staying in a hotel or with friends.

Going to the nearest health food store or local coop: Google mapping it and picking up several key ingredients to put in the mini fridge or if you’re staying with friends is key for traveling right and then packing your food is even better when going on day trips.

When recently on a trip to New Orleans, yes I know what you’re going to say why wouldn’t you eat the food? However I have a very strict diet and I’m on a budget so I will allow for one time out for dinner. I brought with me green tea for alertness in mornings, And nourishing Tulsi tea (Sweet Basil) for afternoons, hot water is usually free if you pack a travel mug.

I went to Whole Foods and local coop and I bought:

coconut unsweetened yogurt honey in bulk, mixed seeds and raisins and
pre made Green smoothies for breakfast.
Almond butter in bulk and gluten free crackers and an orange for each day (vitamin c to keep the immunity high) as snacks to keep up stamina while traveling.

For lunches sliced turkey (or alternative meat), a cucumber,
Seaweed (great contradiction for radiation of the new metal detectors at the airports) and avocados. These are all easy to separate and throw in a bag to eat at a park or at the airport.

Because I’m staying at friends and want to feel like I’m going out a little bit: a gluten-free vegetable dairy free pizza for a quick dinner and to make with my friends some tomatoes to roast, brown rice pasta, olives and garlic from the olive bar. We also topped it off with salmon with thyme (another great contradiction to radiation and an antibacterial to stay healthy while traveling) and asparagus.

Making the pasta salad in bulk, (spinach optional), I had enough left overs to vary my lunch.

Because I ate so well, going out to dinner and eating things I don’t usually eat would be a treat and not make me feel as uncomfortable as if I ate out every day. Often there are unknown amounts of salt and sugars added to food we eat out. This will keep me healthy when I return to a quick paced life of home.

If I was staying longer I could have gotten milk alternative and cereal and baby carrots to eat with the almond butter, as well as apples (when eaten whole apples give great fiber which is needed to help stay regular while traveling)
Healthy fats are key to keep the mind agile and the body in good health.

I hope these tips help you to stay healthy for traveling, or even at home!

Also make sure to have comfortable shoes!
